62 € per square meter for follow-up housing

A 16-square-meter unit in the new follow-up housing facility on Sidlerstraße in Tübingen costs just under 1,000 euros, including utilities. The City of Tübingen is responsible for this facility. In early June 2026, approximately 90 refugees moved into the newly erected container complex there. The City of Tübingen has now informed them of the cost.
For many refugees who are not yet able or permitted to work, these costs are typically covered by other social service providers. Refugees who are already working or in vocational training must pay the fee themselves out of their wages.
However, they can apply for assistance with housing costs from the social service provider responsible for them. It is important that they submit the application immediately upon receiving their cost notice. This is because social service agencies do not provide retroactive support; assistance begins only after the application has been submitted.
In mid-July 2026, the city administration sent the first notices regarding the cost amounts to the residents of the newly constructed container complex on Sidlerstraße. According to these notices, the city charges 62 euros per square meter. It calculates the costs based on the Ordinance on the Use of Housing in the University City of Tübingen for Homeless Persons and Refugees, as well as the Fees for Its Use (Housing Use and Fee Ordinance) dated March 22, 2018, as amended on July 24, 2025. Unlike a rental agreement, the decision to move into follow-up housing is not voluntary. These are not rent payments, but rather calculated fees.
