The Federal Ministry of Finance had earmarked around €763 million for integration courses in 2025. This was met with criticism. Now the ministry will invest an additional €302.8 million. This means that more than €1.06 billion will be available this year. This is according to the federal government’s response to a request from members of the Bundestag from the Left Party.
Most are from Ukraine
In 2024, more than 363,000 people started an integration course. By the end of April 2025, the figure was 122,000. Most of the participants in 2024 came from Ukraine: just under 142,000. They were followed by refugees from Syria (around 93,000), Afghanistan (around 40,000), Iraq (just over 11,000) and Iran (just over 9,000). This order also applies to 2025 and to vocational language courses.
More than 20,000 teachers nationwide
A total of around 1,600 providers offer integration courses nationwide—such as adult education centres. There are 211 providers in Baden-Württemberg. More than 20,000 teachers work for these providers nationwide. In Baden-Württemberg, 2,754 teachers are currently employed.
The focus is on language
There are various integration courses. The general integration course consists of 600 language teaching units and, in all courses, 100 orientation teaching units. These include topics such as culture and history, rights and obligations in Germany, forms of coexistence and values such as equal rights for women. Special integration courses consist of 900 language teaching units. Under certain conditions, intensive courses with 400 language teaching units can also be attended.
