The number of asylum applications from refugees in Germany fell sharply in 2024, namely by 30 percent compared to 2023. This is according to the annual report of the EU agency EUAA, based in Malta. According to the report, the number of asylum applications fell by 92,000 to 237,000. In the EU as a whole, by contrast, the number of asylum applications fell by only 11 percent, and in other populous EU states such as France or Spain, it remained stable.
According to the EUAA, most applicants in Europe came from Syria (151,000), followed by Afghanistan (87,000), Venezuela (74,000) and Turkey (56,000). However, with the exception of Venezuela, these figures also fell significantly. As in previous years, the average recognition rate was 42 percent.
The EUAA was established in 2022 to support the national authorities of EU countries in implementing the Common European Asylum System.
