Asylum cases at the four administrative courts in Baden-Württemberg rose sharply in 2025. This was announced by the Higher Administrative Court in Mannheim at its annual press conference.
“The administrative courts in Baden-Württemberg are groaning under the enormous increase in asylum cases,” said Malte Graßhof, President of the Administrative Court, during the presentation of the annual report. The number of new asylum cases filed last year rose by a significant 82 per cent to 31,479. In 2024, 17,253 cases were filed. Most applicants were from Turkey (31 per cent), Afghanistan (15 per cent) and Syria (7 per cent).
More asylum cases concluded
Although significantly more cases were concluded because additional judges were appointed, the report states that, ultimately, the number of cases resolved could not keep pace with the rising number of new cases. By the end of 2025, almost 21,000 asylum cases were still pending. The backlog had more than doubled compared to 2024 (up 111 per cent).
Fewer asylum appeals expected
Although the average duration of asylum proceedings had fallen again compared to 2024, according to the Administrative Court, to 7.6 months in main proceedings (previous year: 7.9 months) and 1.6 months in urgent proceedings (previous year: 1.7 months), the high backlog suggests a significant increase in the duration of proceedings is to be expected.
The administrative courts in Baden-Württemberg anticipate a decline in asylum cases once the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has cleared its backlog. Furthermore, the number of asylum applications is also falling significantly in Baden-Württemberg, it was added.
