Asylum procedures take longer

In 2024, it took an average of 8.7 months for the German authorities to decide on an asylum application. This was reported by Mediendienst Integration and refers to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). That was 1.7 months longer than in the previous year. At the end of December 2024, the BAMF had 212,656 asylum applications that had not yet been decided on.
The protection rate fell from 51% to 44% in 2024 compared to the previous year. Of the more than 301,000 asylum applications completed by the BAMF in 2024, around 133,000 people were granted protection. The majority of these (around 75,000) were granted subsidiary protection, followed by refugee protection under the Asylum Procedure Act (around 35,000). Asylum under Article 16 of the Basic Law was granted to 1964 people. Almost 21,000 proceedings ended with a ban on deportation.

More than 128,000 appeals
Rejected asylum seekers have filed lawsuits in many cases. In November, more than 128,000 cases were pending before the administrative and higher administrative courts. 7 percent of the appeals were successful in the current year. However, if all proceedings in which the complaint was withdrawn or merged with other complaints are excluded, the rate was 18%.
According to the European Union Asylum Agency (EUAA), around 860,000 asylum applications were submitted across the EU in 2024. Most applications came from refugees from Syria (around 125,300 initial applications), Afghanistan (63,200) and Venezuela (59,300). Most initial applications were made in Germany between January and October 2024 (around 200,700 applications). This was followed by Spain (137,900) and Italy (129,800).
