Bundestag election: More immigrants are allowed to vote

Many immigrants will be able to vote in the Bundestag elections on February 23. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 12 percent of eligible voters in Germany have a migration background. Immigrants must have German citizenship and be over the age of 18 to vote in the Bundestag elections. The number of eligible voters who once immigrated to Germany has therefore continued to rise slightly. In 2017, it was still at 10 percent, in 2013 it was only 9 percent.
Nevertheless, the majority of former migrants are still excluded from the Bundestag elections. According to Mediendienst Integration, only 7.1 of the 17.1 million adults with a history of immigration are eligible to vote – that is 41.4% and therefore less than half. Among the adult direct descendants of immigrants, on the other hand, the figure is 71 percent. According to the Federal Statistical Office, anyone who has immigrated to Germany themselves or whose parents have immigrated to Germany since 1950 has a history of immigration.
