Foreign skilled workers can improve their language skills with new free German courses. The online courses are aimed at employees in nursing, the hotel and catering industry, warehouse logistics, and professional transport.
According to a statement by the Reutlingen Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the German Adult Education Association developed the digital German courses in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. They are free of charge. The online courses comprise around 200 interactive exercises.
Exercises for professional tasks
The courses focus on practical vocabulary and typical professional tasks. Learners can work through the content independently and receive direct feedback after each exercise, according to the announcement. All that is required is a smartphone, tablet, or laptop with internet access.
German courses for catering, logistics, and nursing
In the course for the hotel and catering industry, participants go through virtual stations such as reception, restaurant, event planning, kitchen, and housekeeping. They learn, for example, how to respond to reservation requests and fill out occupancy plans.
The course for warehouse logistics focuses on topics such as goods receipt, warehousing, and filling out delivery documents.
The course for bus and truck drivers covers topics such as reading and understanding timetables, filling out transport documents, and communicating with dispatchers and customers.
In the “Care Assistant” course, participants learn about various documents used in the care sector and practice vocabulary that is important for working in care.
German language skills as a prerequisite
Prerequisites for all courses: You should be able to read and understand short German texts and write short sentences. Alternatively, you should have German language skills at A2 level or above.
Access to the courses
The free courses are available via the VHS learning portal (vhs | Reading and Writing at work) and are also available as a learning app in the Google Play Store.
