Starting July 1, 2026, kiosks, gas stations, vape shops and other retail outlets that sell e-cigarettes must accept used disposable e-cigarettes free of charge. They can be returned even without buying a new e-cigarette.
Do Not Throw Them in General Waste
Disposable e-cigarettes do not belong in general waste. They contain batteries that can cause fires if disposed of incorrectly or damaged. This can be dangerous for people, waste collection vehicles and waste treatment facilities.
More Recycling of Valuable Materials
The new rules are intended to make it easier to return old electronic devices. At the same time, they are meant to improve the recycling of valuable materials contained in these devices. Retailers will also have to provide clear information about return options.
Additional Return Options
Even now, e-cigarettes, like other small electronic devices, can be returned free of charge at recycling centers, municipal collection points and, in some cases, grocery stores. Free return applies to devices with a side length of up to
25 centimeters.
