Early detection of cervical cancer

In Germany, women with statutory health insurance are entitled to an annual preventive examination by their gynecologist from the age of 20. This includes a test for the early detection of cervical cancer. A Pap test is performed between the ages of 20 and 34. This test can detect cell changes in the cervix and treat them more successfully if cancer has developed.

From the age of 35, there is an HPV test
From the age of 35, women receive a combined Pap and HPV test every three years. This so-called co-testing improves early detection because it also tests for human papillomavirus (HPV), the main cause of cervical cancer. Important: Even vaccinated women should participate in screening because the vaccine does not protect against all cancer-causing types of HPV. Further information is available from the Cancer Information Service.
