Fewer people from Syria are coming to Germany

Following the fall of the Assad regime in Syria at the end of 2024, the number of Syrian nationals arriving in Germany this year has fallen by almost half. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the registration authorities recorded around 40,000 new arrivals between January and September 2025. In the same period of 2024, the figure was just over 74,600.
In contrast, the number of Syrian nationals who left Germany increased by more than a third to 21,800. In the same period last year, the figure was just over 16,100. The Federal Statistical Office refers to migration figures, which do not provide any information about the reasons for emigration or immigration or the asylum or protection status of those involved.

Fewer asylum applications

Syrians have continued to seek protection in Germany in the current year. From January to September 2025, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees recorded just over 19,200 initial applications for asylum. That was just over two-thirds less than in the same period last year (58,400). With a share of 21.9 per cent, Syrian nationals thus remained the largest group among the total of 87,800 people who applied for asylum in Germany for the first time.
83,200 Syrians naturalised in 2024
According to the microcensus, around 1.22 million people who had immigrated from Syria themselves or whose parents had immigrated from Syria and who were born here were living in Germany in 2024. Around a quarter of them had German citizenship, for example through naturalisation. According to statistics, around 83,200 Syrians were naturalised in 2024 alone. They accounted for the largest share of all naturalisations, at a good 28 per cent.

One million refugees back in Syria

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, around one million refugees worldwide returned to Syria between 8 December 2024 and September 2025. In addition, 1.8 million internally displaced persons returned to their home communities. According to the Refugee Agency, more than 4.5 million refugees continue to live abroad and more than 7 million internally displaced persons remain within Syria.
