Iran is deporting masses to Afghanistan

Iran has made good on its threats. As early as December 2024, it deported more than 60,000 Afghan women. They had allegedly been living in Iran illegally, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim. The rulers in Tehran had announced that they intended to continue deporting large numbers to the neighboring country until the end of March 2025. They spoke of around two million people.
“At the Islam Kala border crossing, around 3,000 people cross the border from Iran to Afghanistan every day,” Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, told the German Press Agency (dpa). According to the United Nations, around three million Afghans live in Iran, mostly without legal residence status. Many of them work for low wages – for example on construction sites.
