LSBTIQ* under the Protection of the Rainbow

The rainbow is a symbol of the queer movement. “Rainbow Shelter – Arriving Without Violence” is the name of a special project. It offers free advice to LSBTIQ* refugees about their rights and provides information — including a flyer available in twelve languages. It also advises and trains people in institutions and facilities that work with LSBTIQ* refugees.
The abbreviation LSBTIQ* refers to all people who differ from social expectations — whether they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, intersex or non-binary. As LSBTIQ* individuals, refugees “face particular challenges in the asylum procedure and accommodation,” the project writes in its information for refugees.

Special Rights in the Asylum Procedure

Those affected are considered particularly vulnerable. For this reason, there are special rights designed to protect them. This applies, for example, to the asylum procedure. Both sexual orientation and gender identity can be decisive for the outcome of the procedure. Those affected also have the right to have their asylum hearing conducted by specially trained staff (so-called special commissioners).

Reporting Violence Without Negative Consequences

The project provides detailed information about the rights and options available when LSBTIQ* refugees experience violence in accommodation — whether physical, psychological, or sexual. Links on the homepage (see below) lead to counseling centers, for example in Stuttgart, as well as to Rainbow Shelter. Violent incidents can also be reported either by the affected person themselves or by someone else on their behalf. This has “no negative consequences” for them or their asylum procedure, Rainbow Shelter states. The project is funded, among others, by the Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth.
