Ukrainians can now also get married online. Since August 9 of last year, the public service portal Diia has officially made it possible to get married online. By the end of October 2024, 600 couples had already married via Diia and more than 1.3 million people were registered. According to Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Ukraine is the first country in the world to technically implement a complete online marriage. Marriage via the Diia app was named one of the best technological inventions of 2024 by the American magazine Time.
“Click-click and you’re married. We turn your dreams into digital reality,” said the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine. The authority announced that this service was developed to allow military personnel and couples who are far apart to get married despite the circumstances, the distance between cities or even countries. The system is simple, if unromantic: one partner proposes to the other via the app.
The potential spouse then receives a notification. If they agree within two weeks, the two choose a wedding date online. An employee of the state registry office conducts the ceremony online via video link and the newlyweds receive all the necessary documents electronically.
Diia is a nationwide mobile application, a web portal and a brand of the digital state in Ukraine, which was developed by the Ministry of Digital Transformation on behalf of President Volodymyr Zelensky. In 2024, the number of users was over 21 million Ukrainians. The app makes it possible to store driving licenses, birth certificates, national and international passports, tax cards, educational documents and other documents on a smartphone and transfer copies of them. These can then be used for banking or postal services, for example. The app also offers many other options: For example, you can use it to register the birth of a child, submit tax returns, register a business, change your place of residence or check into a hotel.
