„Migrant Pay Gap”: Migrants earn significantly less

Migrants in Germany and seven other countries earn on average almost 20 percent less than locals. This was reported by the Mediendienst Integration media service, citing a study published in the journal Nature. Data from Germany, Denmark, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the US, and Canada were evaluated. „Descendants of people from Africa and the Middle East continue to be particularly disadvantaged,” Mediendienst Integration quotes. However, only a quarter of the gender pay gap, i.e. the difference in earnings, can be explained by unequal pay for employees in the same company. Immigrants are simply less likely to work in well-paid sectors. Even in the second generation, children of migrants still earn eight percent less.

Women are the most affected
According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, foreign women are the most disadvantaged. Their average gross salary is €2,900, which is around €1,000 less than that of their German colleagues. 67 percent of foreign women earn less than €2,000 net per month. Among men with a migrant background, the figure is 41 percent.

Work in low-paid occupations
Foreign workers are more likely to work in occupations that are in short supply but tend to be less well paid. 20.4 percent of all foreign women and 27.5 percent of migrant men work in the cleaning industry. For women, this is followed by elderly care at 16.8 percent. The most common jobs for foreign men are in food production (28.2 percent) or in warehousing, postal delivery, and goods handling (26.7 percent).
