A few days after their 18th birthday, young people receive a letter from the British Armed Forces. It contains the login details for the online questionnaire on the new voluntary military service. All men with British nationality, including dual nationals, must complete it. Women can do so if they wish.
There are repeated claims in migrant circles that men with dual citizenship do not have to perform military service and do not have to complete the questionnaire. tuenews asked the German Armed Forces (Bw) about this. A Bw spokeswoman made it clear: “The new military service is voluntary.” According to the current legal situation, no young man is required to join the German Armed Forces.
Residence must be predominantly in Germany
In the case of the so-called military registration, however, all men born in 2008 or later have no choice. They must participate—i.e. they must have answered the questionnaire no later than one month after receiving the letter and take part in the medical examination. Otherwise, they risk penalties. This also applies to dual nationals. “The decisive factor is German citizenship, regardless of any other citizenship,” said the Bundeswehr spokeswoman. The decisive factor for dual nationals’ obligation to complete the questionnaire is “that the person’s residence and primary place of residence is in Germany.”
