More foreign professional qualifications recognized

The number of professional qualifications obtained abroad and recognized in Germany continued to rise in 2024. According to the Federal Statistical Office, more than 79,000 applications were approved. That was over 20 percent more than in the previous year. Recognitions have more than tripled since 2016. Fifty-nine percent of all applications approved were submitted by women and 41 percent by men.

Turkey once again ranks first among training countries
With an increase of around 2,600 to 9,200 recognitions, professional qualifications acquired in Turkey were once again the most frequently recognized in 2024. Ukraine followed some way behind with 6,400 recognitions. Here, the number has more than doubled compared to the previous year. The training countries Tunisia with 5,300, India with 4,900, and Syria with 4,300 recognitions were also frequently represented.

Nursing professionals remain the most frequently recognized profession in 2024
The top 5 most frequently recognized professions remain virtually unchanged. Nursing remains in first place with 32,500 recognitions and a share of 41 percent. This is followed by doctors with a share of 14 percent. Engineers come next with 5 percent. Teachers and physiotherapists occupy fourth and fifth place, closely followed by educators with 2,100 recognitions.

New record high for ongoing recognition procedures
The total number of applications for recognition of foreign professional qualifications reached a new high in 2024 with around 95,500. In 2016, the figure was only 38,000, meaning that the number has more than doubled. According to the Federal Statistical Office, almost all of the procedures processed were approved.
