Naturalisation after five years at the earliest

The so-called turbo naturalisation after three years is being abolished again. A majority in the Bundestag has now voted in favour of this. The previous traffic light coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP had only introduced the regulation for particularly well-integrated foreigners at the end of July 2024. Nothing will change with regard to dual citizenship.
Members of the CDU and SPD coalition and the AfD voted against the faster route to a British passport. The Greens and the Left criticised this decision. However, only a few people have taken advantage of the opportunity for faster naturalisation in the past year. According to media research, there were only 16 “turbo” naturalisations in Baden-Württemberg in 2024.

High requirements prevent applications
Naturalisation after three years was subject to high requirements such as good school performance, social engagement, a secure livelihood and language skills at C1 level. Experts see these high hurdles as a reason for the low number of applications. Before the traffic light coalition changed the nationality law, applicants had to prove that they had been resident in Germany for at least eight years before naturalisation.
