Nitrous oxide will soon be banned for children and adolescents. They will then be prohibited from buying or possessing the party drug. The Bundestag and Bundesrat have approved the federal government’s draft bill. The ban is expected to come into force on April 1, 2026.
Nitrous oxide is considered a mild anesthetic in medicine. However, the active ingredient nitrous oxide (N₂O) has a euphoric effect, which is why it has been frequently used as a drug in recent years. However, it is dangerous and can cause nerve damage.
Online sales of nitrous oxide will be completely banned, and self-service vending machines will also be eliminated. Ready-to-use spray cream will still be available for purchase, even though the cartridges also contain the substance.
