2,873 people were deported from Baden-Württemberg in 2024. This means that the number rose by 774 people (37 percent) compared to the previous year. These figures were published by the Baden-Württemberg Refugee Council based on information from the Ministry of Justice and Migration. According to the ministry, 644 of the deportees were criminals. For the first time since the Taliban seized power, five people were also deported to Afghanistan. There has also been a noticeable increase in the number of deportations to Iraq: 126 (2023: 29).
The most common country of origin and destination is once again North Macedonia, with 458 people deported to the country (2023: 311). Georgia follows in second place (281) – which has been considered a “safe country of origin” since the end of 2023 (2023: 118). The third most common destination country is Gambia with 154 persons (2023: 301).
Deportation also to EU countries
Not all people were deported to their country of origin. Some were deported to countries that agreed to accept them. This includes, for example, the transfer of people for whom other countries are responsible under the so-called Dublin procedure, or people with protection status in other European countries. For example, 112 Syrians were all deported to other European countries, but no one was deported to Syria.
The number of voluntary departures, at 3,473, reached a peak since 2017. A total of 6,346 refugees left the state of Baden-Württemberg that year.
