Recognition of higher education qualifications in Germany

Anyone who has studied at a foreign university and wants to come to Germany to work often has to have their university degree recognised. The decisive factor here is that the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) evaluates the foreign university degree. The ZAB’s ‘certificate evaluation’ is not a formal professional recognition (recognition) for regulated professions, but rather a comparative classification of the university degree. A different recognition procedure applies to regulated professions (e.g. doctors, nursing). Their Anabin database indicates whether the university degree corresponds to one obtained in Germany as standard.

Anyone who has studied at one of the listed universities can have their degree assessed online on the ZAB website. To do this, you must scan and upload a package of documents or submit certified copies, including your degree certificate in the original language, a list of all subjects studied and grades, your school leaving certificate, passport or identity card. The ZAB currently charges a fee of €208. The process often takes several months. The application form is available on the official ZAB website. The final ‘certificate evaluation for foreign university degrees’ can then be submitted when applying for a job and is important, for example, for proving the required qualifications and for determining the level of wages and salaries.
