Thursday, September 11, is another nationwide warning day. When sirens wail at 11 a.m. in some municipalities, such as Tübingen-Lustnau or Tübingen-Bühl, there is no cause for concern. This is a test alarm. On the national warning day, all instruments that can be used to alert the population to dangers in an emergency are tested. The all-clear will be given at 11:45 a.m.
Test warnings also on smartphone apps
The test warnings will also be issued via radio and television as well as smartphone apps such as NINA. Via cell broadcasting, all cell phones that have dialed into a radio mast will automatically receive a message. It is similar to a text message, so no special app is required. However, the all-clear is not currently sent via cell broadcast. The system may not work on older mobile phones.
Warning of impending disasters
The authorities want to use the warning day to raise awareness of civil protection and check that all systems are working smoothly. To warn people of impending disasters, such as severe flooding, local authorities have access to the Federal Modular Warning System (MoWaS). Different measures are used depending on the type of hazard.
