In winter, snow falls even at lower altitudes and ice can form. That is why the city of Tübingen reminds residents of their obligation to clear snow and grit. This applies to businesses as well as private households. Other towns and municipalities in the district of Tübingen also stipulate where, when and how snow must be cleared and gritting carried out.
Tenants are also responsible
Anyone who lives in Tübingen is responsible for all public traffic areas along their house where pedestrians walk. Anyone who lives in the house, regardless of whether they are a tenant or homeowner, must clear snow and grit in the event of black ice. The obligation to clear snow and grit applies to all pavements, footpaths and steps on the property. However, it also applies to pavements at bus stops without shelters. If there is no pavement on either side of the road and in traffic-calmed areas, a 1.5-metre-wide strip must be cleared for pedestrians.
If necessary, shovel snow several times a day
The obligation to clear snow and grit applies on all weekdays: From Monday to Friday by 7 a.m., on Saturdays by 8 a.m. and on Sundays by 9 a.m., the strips must be easily passable. If it snows or ice forms after that, residents must clear or grit their area several times by 9 p.m. De-icing salts or other environmentally harmful substances may only be used in cases of extreme slipperiness if there is no other way to remove the ice. As a rule, grit from one of the 19 grit piles in the city area helps.
Clinics should also be accessible at night
At the municipal service company, 96 employees work in two shifts to clear and grit the roads—Monday to Saturday between 4 a.m. and 9 p.m., and on Sundays from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. If necessary, they also keep the most important routes, for example to the clinics, clear at night. Otherwise, clearing and gritting is carried out according to urgency.
