In Baden-Württemberg, local authorities set the parental contributions for crèches, kindergartens, after-school care, and daycare. If the contribution becomes a financial burden, the economic youth welfare service (WJH) of the district of Tübingen can reduce the fees or cover them in full. This applies to all forms of childcare – municipal, non-profit, or daycare.
Who decides and according to what criteria
The local youth welfare office is responsible. The decisive factors are household income and the individual family situation. Since the contribution tables vary from municipality to municipality, the requirements also differ within the district.
When less is paid
Relief may be considered if the parental contribution is disproportionate. Common reasons include low income, multiple children in care, or special life circumstances. The relief applies from the date of application.
What is covered – and what is not
As a rule, the parental contribution for childcare is subsidized. Meal costs are usually not included. However, there are separate discounts for lunch and meals: with benefits from the BuT education package, the KreisBonusCard or KreisBonusCard Extra, lunch is often free of charge, and breakfast and snacks are discounted. The specific conditions depend on the municipality and the provider.
Application
Applications are submitted via the WJH at the Tübingen district office; in independent cities, they are submitted via the respective city administration. Online applications can be submitted via the state portal service-bw or directly via the district website. Proof of income and a brief description of the family situation are usually required. There is no fee for submitting an application; the processing time depends on the workload and the completeness of the documents.
Practical information
Before submitting an application, it is worth looking into other social benefits such as housing allowance or child supplement – these often provide additional relief for contributions and meals. Advice centers run by welfare organizations such as Caritas or Diakonie can help you put together the necessary documents.
