Support for pregnant women in Germany

In Germany, there are various forms of state support available to pregnant women who receive income support from the Jobcentre or who are asylum seekers. The aim of these benefits is to protect the health of mother and child and to provide financial support to families.

Support for pregnant women receiving income support

Pregnant women receiving income support must notify the Jobcentre of their pregnancy in order to receive the additional benefits. As a rule, an informal application together with a medical certificate or a copy of the antenatal record showing the expected due date is sufficient.
From the 13th week of pregnancy, pregnant women are entitled to an additional financial allowance. This so-called “additional allowance” amounts to 17 per cent of the relevant standard rate and is paid until the end of the month in which the birth takes place:

One-off assistance for pregnancy and baby

In addition, a one-off payment for initial baby equipment can be applied for at the Jobcentre. This support is intended for essential items for the baby, such as: baby clothes, a cot, a pram and other necessary baby items:

Additional money for female asylum seekers

According to Sven Jäger, head of the Refugee and Integration Department at Tübingen District Office, additional support for pregnant women is available both for female asylum seekers receiving benefits under Section 3 of the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (AsylbLG) (https://sozialplattform.de/ leistungen-nach-asylbewerberleistungsgesetz-asylblg-0) and for those receiving benefits under Section 2 of the AsylbLG. The additional allowance is granted from the 13th week of pregnancy and amounts to 17 per cent of the relevant standard rate. The women are also entitled to a starter kit for the baby.

Additional help from the “Mutter und Kind” Foundation

Pregnant women on low incomes can receive additional support from the federal “Mutter und Kind” foundation. This assistance is a one-off financial grant that can be used, for example, for the following items: clothing during pregnancy, baby equipment and furniture, or a pram. The application must be submitted before the birth and is made via a pregnancy advice centre (e.g. Caritas, Diakonie or Pro Familia):
