Syrian offenders lose protection

Syrian criminals must expect to lose their protection status in Germany soon. This also applies to refugees who are classified as dangerous by the German authorities. In both cases, so-called revocation proceedings are initiated, which can lead to refugees losing their right of residence. At the request of tuenews INTERNATIONAL, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) confirmed that the Federal Ministry of the Interior has instructed the authority to make such decisions again. These had been suspended following the change of power in Syria in December 2024. “The existence of serious criminal offenses excludes recognition of protection by the BAMF or can lead to the revocation of the protection granted,” the BAMF announced. This will also make deportations easier. Germany has not deported any refugees to Syria since 2012.

The new federal government had already agreed in the coalition agreement to send people back to Syria and Afghanistan. The plan was to start with criminals. At the beginning of July, Austria deported a criminal to Syria for the first time in 15 years.
