Three years of war in Ukraine

More and more people are fleeing
On February 24, it will be three years since Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine. The number of Ukrainians seeking protection in Germany continues to rise. According to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), a further 200,000 refugees have been registered since the beginning of December alone. Their number is now 1.25 million. Women and girls make up the largest share, at 63 percent. According to the news channel ntv, Faeser has also promised continued protection: “Those who had to flee from the Russian invasion will continue to be safe with us,” she said.
Ukraine has lost a significant proportion of its population due to war and flight. 4.3 million refugees from Ukraine currently live in European countries. Most of the refugees are in North Rhine-Westphalia (263,000), with Baden-Württemberg in third place after Bavaria with 167,000. Almost eight percent more refugees from Ukraine now live in the southwest than a year ago. According to the Integration Media Service, around 400,000 people who fled to Germany from Ukraine have left the country again, and around 5,000 of them have died. According to World Bank estimates, 37 million people will be living in Ukraine in 2023. In 2022, the population was still over 41 million.

Czech Republic takes in more in percentage terms
Although more refugees from Ukraine live in Germany than anywhere else, “in relation to the population, Germany is not among the top ten European host countries,” writes the integration media service. According to the report, the Czech Republic is hosting almost 38 Ukrainian refugees per 1,000 inhabitants, almost three times more than Germany, which hosts 14. Poland, too, has taken in more than twice as many refugees as Germany in relation to its population. Ireland and Norway have also taken in a comparatively large number of refugees.

More and more are finding a job
The number of Ukrainian refugees who have found work continues to rise nationwide. In November 2024, it stood at 31.7 percent. In November 2024, around 296,000 Ukrainians were in employment. Around 245,200 of them were in jobs subject to social security contributions, with a further 50,800 in marginal employment. Compared to the previous year, almost 40 percent more refugees from Ukraine had a job.
