By 2030, Tübingen’s municipal utility company plans to remove the ticket machines from its buses. It is turning to digital solutions such as apps, with the aim of cutting costs.
Digital tickets—such as those available through the Deutschlandticket or via the new naldo ticket shop app—are the more modern and flexible option, according to a press release. Furthermore, the ticket machines on TüBus buses are being used less and less. They also require constant repairs, which is very expensive. Starting in 2027, the ticket machines will be phased out of the buses.
Tickets from Stationary Machines
Passengers who do not wish to or are unable to use the digital options can purchase tickets at stationary machines throughout the city, for example at the main train station, on the Neckar Bridge, or at the “Uni-Kliniken Berg” and “BG Unfallklinik” stops. Tickets can also be purchased at sales locations such as the bwegt Passenger Center at Tübingen’s main train station. For example, 4-ride passes are still available there. According to Stadtwerke, cash payments are still accepted at these locations.
Short-distance tickets to be phased out
Short-distance tickets within the Tübingen city limits will also be phased out. The reason given is that sales of short-distance tickets have declined by over 40 percent since the introduction of the Deutschlandticket.
