Ukrainian House Reutlingen: learning, culture, meetups

The association Ukrainian House Reutlingen offers language courses, cultural events and bandura lessons. Founded in 2022, it supports Ukrainians in Reutlingen and the surrounding area, helps them integrate and preserves Ukrainian language and culture. Anyone else interested is also welcome. The association has also launched the Ukrainian Library project, whose collection began with donated books.

Meeting at “Ukrainian Sundays”

On the first Sunday of every month at 3 p.m., the association hosts “Ukrainian Sundays” at Haus der Kulturen Reutlingen / Bürgerhaus e. V., Eberhardstraße 4. Visitors can meet new people and share experiences. The themes vary. Previously announced activities included workshops on making traditional motanka dolls and Ukrainian varenyky dumplings, Ukrainian book readings, and an information session on finding work and preparing job applications. The association publishes details of upcoming meetings on its website.

Learning German and preparing for employment

In 2025, the association established an education centre. According to the association, it offers German courses at B1, B2 and C1 levels, as well as language cafés for women, through the “MiA – Migrantinnen einfach stark im Alltag” programme.
Other educational activities are open to both women and men. These include self-presentation courses, help with job applications and career guidance, and communication training. Classes take place online or in person.

Learning to play the bandura

The educational programme also includes lessons on the bandura, a traditional Ukrainian plucked string instrument. The course is suitable for beginners and those with previous experience. Participants learn playing techniques, develop their sense of rhythm and musical expression, and learn simple melodies and Ukrainian songs.
The lessons are led by bandura player and singer Dariia Ivanytska. She taught at a children’s music school in Ukraine for six years. More about the instrument can be found in the article “The bandura: an instrument of Ukrainian identity”.

Donations and project funding

The association seeks donations for its cultural and educational activities. According to the association, these funds are used to purchase books, traditional clothing, musical instruments and materials for events and educational projects. The MiA activities for women are offered through a programme funded by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).
