More and more Ukrainians in Germany are having their professional qualifications recognised. Almost all of them are assessed as being fully or partially equivalent. This was announced by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) in Bonn.
In its press release, the institute reports a “record increase” in 2024: Around 7,300 applications for the recognition of Ukrainian professional qualifications are a record high. Their number has increased fivefold in just two years. BIBB President Friedrich Esser described this increase as “remarkable and encouraging”. Similarly, never before have so many university graduates wanted to have their degrees recognised. In 2024, 45,100 applications were received from them.
Women accounted for 71 per cent of applications
It is mainly women who have fled Ukraine. They accounted for 71 per cent of applications for recognition of their qualifications. The applications generally concerned the professions of engineer, nurse, teacher, educator and doctor. In order to work in these fields in Germany, the qualifications must be recognised.
Professional recognition secures residence
In order for refugees from Ukraine to obtain a long-term “residence permit for the purpose of gainful employment”, they usually need professional recognition. This title offers more security than the temporary protection provided by Section 24 of the Residence Act. It is currently limited until 4 March 2026. According to the BIBB, it is “foreseeable” that it will be extended for another year.
