Ukrainians may stay longer in Germany

The residence permit for refugees from Ukraine will be automatically extended until March 4, 2026. This was announced by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). Refugees from Ukraine do not need to apply for an extension of their protection status or visit the migration authorities. The prerequisite is a residence permit in accordance with Section 24 of the Residence Act, which is still valid on February 1, 2025. Refugees from Ukraine are subject to the so-called mass flight directive in Europe. In this case, refugees fleeing war are granted a humanitarian right to stay without having to apply for asylum.
According to the Central Register of Foreigners, around 1.3 million people with Ukrainian citizenship were living in Germany in August 2024. The vast majority of them are war refugees who fled their homeland after Russia attacked them.
