Since the beginning of November, car owners have been able to download a digital version of their vehicle registration certificate to their cell phone, according to the Federal Ministry of Transport. However, the path to a cell phone vehicle registration certificate is rocky: The first step is to download the i-Kfz app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. This requires IOS version 17 or higher (Apple) or Android version 12 or higher (Android) to be installed on the cell phone. In order to download the vehicle registration certificate, you also need the online function of your ID card with the corresponding PIN. However, you can also obtain a QR code from the registration authority, which can be used to store the vehicle registration certificate in the app. If you are traveling abroad, you must still carry the vehicle registration certificate in paper form.
Once everything is set up, the online vehicle registration certificate can also be shared – for example, via a QR code or a link. This means that relatives or friends who use the car also always have the vehicle registration certificate with them. According to the Department of Transportation, the new app also allows drivers to register, deregister, and re-register their vehicles online. This is already possible in the district of Tübingen, but not yet in some other municipalities.
