An accident can happen at any time and without warning. According to the ADAC automobile club, statistically there is an accident every twelve seconds in Germany. In such moments, it is important to stay calm and to proceed systematically.
Secure the accident site
To alert following traffic, the hazard warning lights must be switched on. For personal protection, a reflective vest should be put on. It increases visibility, especially in low light conditions. Then a warning triangle must be set up at an appropriate distance from the accident site: in towns, this is about 50 metres, and on country roads and motorways about 100 metres.
Provide first aid and call the emergency services
If there are any casualties, first aid should be administered. This may mean, for example, removing the injured from the danger area. Failure to provide assistance is a punishable offence. In the event of serious injuries, in particular, call the emergency number 112 immediately. This number is valid throughout Europe for emergencies. An emergency call can be made from any telephone free of charge. It is important to describe the accident situation accurately, including the precise location of the accident, the number of injured and the severity of their injuries. On the motorway, an accident can be reported directly via the emergency call point. This automatically locates the site.
Document the accident
Every glove compartment should contain an accident report form. Those involved in an accident should note down the names, addresses, phone numbers, driving licence numbers and insurance details of all parties involved, as well as the location and time of the accident. In addition, the position of the vehicles, damage and the surroundings of the accident site should be documented with photos as evidence. If there are witnesses to the accident, their contact details should be recorded.
Informing the insurance company
The accident should be reported to your own motor liability insurance company as soon as possible. Many insurance companies require a report within a week. There is a free central call centre for insurers that is staffed around the clock, 365 days a year: in Germany, call 0800 250 2600.
Clear the scene of the accident
Only after consultation with the police can vehicles, if still possible, be driven away so as not to hinder the flow of traffic.
