When exhibitionists harass women

It happens time and time again – as recently at the Hirschauer Baggersee: a man exposes himself to a woman and performs sexual acts on himself. This is a criminal offense and can result in a fine or up to one year in prison upon request or in cases of particular public interest.

Police apprehend suspect
In the Hirschauer case, the woman quickly informed the police. Police officers from several patrol cars conducted a successful search. They found the suspect still near the scene of the crime.

Do not react
How should women behave if they are harassed by an exhibitionist? Experts advise leaving the scene as quickly and calmly as possible and dialing 911. Exhibitionists want to show themselves and often scare their victims. To spoil their fun, it is usually important to ignore the perpetrator and not react. Depending on the specific situation, women can also draw attention to themselves and the perpetrator by shouting loudly.

Pay attention to the exact appearance
To make it easier for the police to search for the perpetrator, they need as much information as possible. As difficult as it may be in the situation, women who are harassed should remember as many details as possible about the perpetrator—for example, age, exact appearance (height, build, eyes, hair), clothing, and any items they may have been carrying, such as backpacks. The more accurate the description, the greater the chance of finding the man.

File a criminal complaint
Exhibitionists can be repeat offenders. Experts therefore recommend filing a criminal complaint. This may lead to the perpetrator undergoing therapy, which could prevent further offences. Punishment is regulated by Section 183 of the Criminal Code.
