The Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC) warns against leaving children, animals, older adults, or people with limited mobility in cars during warm weather. Even just a few minutes in a vehicle parked in the sun can be dangerous.
The car interior heats up quickly
For example, on June 17, a mother in Schorndorf forgot her 20-month-old daughter in the car. The girl died of heatstroke. According to ADAC, the temperature inside a vehicle rises much faster than many people expect. In a test conducted by the automobile club, temperatures inside the vehicle exceeded 50 degrees Celsius after just half an hour. After an hour and a half, the temperature reached 59.1 degrees Celsius.
According to ADAC, even slightly open windows are not enough to effectively cool down the car. For this reason, children and animals should never be left in a vehicle “just for a moment,” for example while running a quick errand.
What to do in an emergency
Anyone who discovers a child or an animal in an overheated car should first check whether there is still a reaction, for example by tapping on the window. If there are signs of overheating — such as lethargy or heavy sweating in people, or heavy panting in animals — the police or fire department should be called.
According to ADAC, breaking a car window is permitted only in an emergency, when there is an immediate danger to life or health.
