Ammertalbahn Back to Emergency Service

The Ammertalbahn is having problems again. According to the ÖPNV public transportation authority, there have been an increasing number of service disruptions this week because the diesel locomotives are apparently overheating. Starting Monday, June 29, trains will therefore run only once an hour. Additional buses will be deployed. This is expected to remain in effect until July 12.
Trains in Tübingen depart for Herrenberg from 5:41 a.m. to 11:41 p.m. In Herrenberg, trains depart from 5:49 a.m. to 11:49 p.m. There are additional trains during off-peak hours. Their departure times can be found on the Ammertalbahn website. The bus departs from Tübingen at the 10- and 50-minute marks, stopping at all stations along the route, and from Herrenberg at the 15- and 55-minute marks. This is intended to enable students from the Ammertal region to reach schools in Tübingen, Rottenburg, and Herrenberg.
The Ammertalbahn Special-Purpose Association criticizes DB Regio for having repeatedly deployed diesel locomotives on the Ammertalbahn line instead of the agreed-upon electric locomotives. However, these locomotives are causing problems. “The cause of this is an exceptionally high rate of malfunctions in the locomotives, which shows no discernible pattern, making repairs more difficult and leading to a lack of locomotive availability,” the association states. “After we were already confronted with numerous vehicle-related outages in January due to sub-zero temperatures and the onset of winter, the summer heat is now causing a similarly unsatisfactory situation,” says Managing Director Sarah Wüstenhöfer. District Administrator Hendrik Bednarz is calling on DB Regio to “ensure both vehicle availability and an improvement in service quality, and to present a sustainable plan.” Bednarz wrote this in his capacity as association chairman to the regional management of DB Regio.
