Deutsche Bahn (DB) will ban alcohol consumption at all of its approximately 5,400 train stations in Germany. The new rule will be introduced gradually and is expected to apply nationwide no later than 15 October 2026. The aim is to improve the safety of travellers and employees and reduce violent incidents at train stations.
Rollout by Mid-October
An alcohol consumption ban is already in force at around 30 train stations, including stations in Cologne, Munich and Hamburg. From 1 September, the ban is also expected to apply at Berlin Central Station, Berlin-Gesundbrunnen and the stations in Kiel and Braunschweig, among others. DB will then gradually introduce the rule at all remaining stations.
To implement the ban, the stations’ house rules will be amended in coordination with local authorities.
What Exactly Is Prohibited
Drinking alcoholic beverages is prohibited in station areas operated by Deutsche Bahn, including platforms. The exact areas covered are determined by the house rules of each station.
It does not matter whether the drink was purchased at the station or brought in from elsewhere. Deutsche Bahn will enforce the rule under its right to set rules on its premises.
Carrying Alcohol Remains Permitted
Travellers may continue to carry alcoholic beverages in their luggage. However, bottles and cans must remain sealed.
Shops at train stations may also continue to sell alcohol. Buying and carrying sealed alcoholic beverages therefore remain permitted.
Food and Beverage Outlets Are Exempt
Alcohol may still be served and consumed in restaurants, bars and other food and beverage outlets within train stations. This exemption applies only to the designated areas of these establishments.
Consequences of Violations
Anyone who violates the ban will be asked to leave the station. In the event of a repeat offence, Deutsche Bahn will ban the person from the station.
Greater Safety and Cleanliness
According to Deutsche Bahn, excessive alcohol consumption is often linked to violent incidents at train stations. Experience at stations where bans are already in place has also shown that there is less violence and less litter.
