Disposing of bulky waste correctly: book a collection or take it to a recycling centre

Wobbly chairs, boxes of clothes that no longer fit, scratched frying pans: some people leave unwanted items in public spaces such as pavements or parks. Illegally disposing of rubbish or bulky waste can be expensive. This also applies to boxes marked ‘free to a good home’.
“Rubbish attracts fly-tipping and is an eyesore,” says Tübingen’s mayor, Gundula Schäfer-Vogel. There are two ways to dispose of unwanted items correctly: households can register bulky waste – as well as wooden furniture, electrical or metal scrap – for free collection twice a year. Alternatively, items can be dropped off free of charge at the waste disposal centre in Dußlingen, provided the token from the annual fee notice is presented. Residents of apartment blocks can obtain the tokens from their landlords or property managers.

Bulky waste must be ready for collection from 6 am

As listed by the district’s waste management authority, bulky waste includes large items – such as duvets, prams, mattresses, armchairs, carpets or plastic laundry baskets.
Bulky waste that has been registered can be put out as early as the evening before collection. It must be ready from 6 am on the day of collection. Anyone who leaves items out ‘unauthorised’, i.e. without prior registration, ‘is committing an administrative offence’, states the City of Tübingen. Anyone who does so and is identified must expect to be fined. Furthermore, the person responsible may also be charged for disposal costs.
