The German language is the key to studying and professional success in Germany. That is why universities and authorities in Baden-Württemberg support foreign students in learning German. To study at university, students must demonstrate a certain level of language proficiency, for example with a DSH certificate (German language test for university admission) or the TestDaF level, which corresponds to C1.
State support for German courses
In Baden-Württemberg, there is the “VwV Deutsch” programme. This is a state funding programme that supports local authorities and educational institutions in offering German courses for migrants and refugees. The courses cover different language levels:

Migrants can receive financial support for German courses, for example through job centres, integration offices, district offices, universities or further education providers, if the courses are officially recognised. It is important to register early, find out about the course conditions and the required language level, and check whether the provider is officially recognised:

Academic German courses at the University of Tübingen
The University of Tübingen offers German courses for all levels from A1 to C1 through its Language Centre and the House of Languages. Foreign students enrolled at the university can attend these courses free of charge or for a small fee. There are also preparatory courses for the DSH exam.

Intensive course to prepare for studies
The intensive course “Come to Prepare” is aimed at foreign students who want to improve their German from B2 to C1+. The aim is to strengthen academic German language skills and prepare students for the Digital TestDaF. There is cultural and social preparation, workshops on society, politics and culture in Germany, and training in intercultural skills. Students receive personal support from university students (peer mentoring) as well as advice on starting their studies and living in Germany. The conditions for participation are that students are enrolled at the University of Tübingen, have at least B2 language level and regularly attend all courses and workshops:
