Anyone who does not want the tech company to use their own images and texts on Facebook and Instagram to train its “Meta AI” chatbot must object in writing by May 26. This was announced by the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center. Meta provides forms on Facebook and Instagram for the objection. However, you must be logged in to do so. A reason for the objection is not necessary. The consumer advice center is convinced that Meta’s approach violates European data protection law and has therefore applied to the Cologne Higher Regional Court for a temporary injunction.
Meta AI uses names, images, videos, and comments
Meta AI is the blue circle on Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. It cannot be deactivated. The company now wants to use names, images, comments on social networks and much more throughout the EU to train its chatbot and compete with other AI tools such as Chat GPT. This also includes videos that have been shared publicly. WhatsApp data is not affected, as it is end-to-end encrypted – unless Meta AI is actively used.
On the homepage of the consumer advice center you will find links to file an objection. There is also a detailed explanation of how to prohibit the use of data in other ways.
