On long trips, it is not always easy for Muslim travelers to find a suitable place to pray and perform ablutions. Several German airports therefore have prayer rooms for Muslims.
Munich Airport has several such rooms, some of which include facilities for ablutions. The rooms there are simple and quiet. Frankfurt Airport also has several Muslim prayer rooms in various locations. Hamburg and Düsseldorf airports also offer Muslim prayer rooms. At Cologne/Bonn Airport, two new prayer rooms were opened in July 2026—one for men and one for women. Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport also has a prayer room for Muslims in addition to its ecumenical room of silence.
Often a Space for All Religions
At other German airports, such as those in Berlin and Stuttgart, there are rooms of silence or meditation rooms open to people of different religions. However, these are not specifically equipped for Muslim prayers.
44 Mosques at Istanbul Airport
International airports, such as those in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Toronto, and Singapore, also offer prayer facilities for Muslims. According to its own figures, Istanbul Airport has a total of 44 mosques. Half of these are for women and half for men. In addition, there are other interfaith prayer rooms.
Depending on the airport, there are either separate Muslim prayer rooms or shared prayer spaces for various religions. They help travelers meet their religious needs even while on the go.
Different Needs
For many Muslims, these spaces are not a matter of privilege. They see them as a sign of how public institutions can accommodate the diverse religious needs of their visitors.
Islamic prayer is more than a moment of peace or meditation. It is a religious act for which certain conditions are essential—such as ritual ablution, facing Mecca, a clean prayer rug, and a suitable location. A small prayer room can therefore mean a great deal to travelers. It makes a long journey a little easier.
