Pregnant women who work have special rights in Germany and receive financial support. Laws such as the Maternity Protection Act and financial benefits ensure that they are protected during pregnancy and after the birth.
Maternity protection
The Maternity Protection Act protects women during pregnancy and around the time of childbirth. The so-called maternity protection period normally begins six weeks before the birth and ends eight weeks after the birth. During this time, women are generally not allowed to work:

Maternity allowance
During the maternity protection period, working women receive maternity allowance. The statutory health insurance fund pays up to 13 euros per day. If the salary is higher, the employer pays a top-up so that the income usually corresponds to the previous net salary.
Parental allowance and child benefit
After the birth, parents can apply for parental allowance. Families also receive child benefit, currently 259 euros per month per child.
