From 15 June, temperatures are forecast to rise above 30 degrees. Prolonged exposure to heat can be harmful to your health and lead to dizziness, exhaustion, headaches or difficulty concentrating. Older people, pregnant women, babies and young children, people with chronic illnesses, as well as those in need of care and homeless people, are particularly at risk. In severe cases of exposure to intense heat, there is a risk of heatstroke or life-threatening circulatory problems.
Health authorities, health insurance providers and the German Weather Service (DWD) have published a series of recommendations on how to protect yourself from the heat:
– Avoid direct sunlight and carry out physical activities in the morning or evening.
– Drink plenty of non-alcoholic drinks.
– To keep living spaces cool, windows should, where possible, only be opened early in the morning or at night. During the day, closed shutters, curtains or blinds help to keep the heat out.
– Pets should have constant access to fresh water and shaded areas on hot days.
– High temperatures can also affect medicines. Medicines should always be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight.
