EU imposes €200 million fine on Temu

The European Commission is taking action against the online shopping platform Temu. The Commission has imposed a fine of €200 million. The basis for this is a breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA). This regulates the handling of illegal content and products on major platforms in the EU.

Allegations against Temu

According to the EU authorities, Temu failed to adequately assess the risks associated with illegal or unsafe products on its platform. This exposed consumers in the European Union to an increased risk.

Significance of the Digital Services Act

The Digital Services Act obliges large online platforms to identify and effectively address systemic risks. The aim is to create a safe digital market and better protect consumers.

Temu’s response

Following the European Commission’s decision, Temu stated that the company considered the fine to be disproportionate. Temu emphasised that it takes the requirements of the Digital Services Act seriously and has already implemented extensive measures to improve product safety, risk control and consumer protection. Furthermore, the company stated that it would continue to cooperate with the European authorities and further strengthen its internal control and safety mechanisms in order to fully comply with applicable EU regulations.
