The residence permit for Ukrainians who fled the war will be automatically extended until March 4, 2027, according to an announcement by the German government. The residence permit under Section 24 of the Residence Act will therefore remain valid without the need to apply for an extension.
Already postponed three times
Around 1.1 million people from Ukraine live in Germany with such a permit. It has already been extended three times. However, the extension does not apply to refugees from Ukraine who are not Ukrainian citizens – unless they or their family members lived there before the outbreak of the war with permanent residence or protection status.
However, the Federal Government Commissioner for Integration points out that the eID function of the residence permit, i.e., the online ID function, can no longer be used after the original expiration date.
