Direct Flights from Germany to Syria Resume

Germany and Syria have resumed direct air service after about 15 years.

First Direct Flights to Damascus and Aleppo

On July 29, the German airline LEAV Aviation launched its first direct flight from Düsseldorf to Damascus. Since August 1, the airline has also been flying directly from Cologne to Aleppo. Starting in mid-August, Sundair will also offer direct flights between Berlin and Damascus.

Agreement Makes New Flights Possible

The resumption of flights is not solely a decision by the airlines. It was made possible by an agreement between Germany and Syria. On July 16, both countries signed an air transport agreement. It establishes the legal basis for the resumption of direct commercial flights.
The agreement is also intended to facilitate further cooperation in air transport. This includes, among other things, joint flight offerings and greater alignment of regulations with international standards.

Germany continues to issue travel warnings

Despite the new flight connections, the Federal Foreign Office continues to warn against travel to Syria. The security situation in the country remains tense and could change rapidly. This could also disrupt air traffic.
