Tips for Older Adults of All Nationalities and Cultures

Getting Around in Tübingen, Resources for People on a Tight Budget, and Exercise Tips for People Age 60 and Older: The City of Tübingen offers three free brochures on these topics. They can be downloaded or picked up at City Hall, the administrative offices in the outlying districts, and the Citizens’ Service Center.

Getting Around by Bus and Train, on Foot, or in a Wheelchair

Anyone who wants to stay mobile will find plenty of tips in the new 26-page brochure “Staying Active and Mobile in Tübingen—At Any Age.” It covers bus and train service as well as relevant support services. It also addresses transportation services, accessible parking spaces, and the option to permanently surrender your driver’s license in exchange for an annual pass. This pass allows you to use public transportation throughout Germany for 12 months. A wheelchair for people with mobility impairments, to explore the city, can be borrowed from the tourist office at the Neckar Bridge. If you’re looking for a restroom after a walk through the city, you’ll find one listed in the directory of all public restrooms. There’s also a list of “friendly restrooms,” which can be used free of charge in restaurants, government offices, or stores.

Participating in Social Life on a Tight Budget

Affordable or free options for people on a tight budget can be found in the corresponding brochure. It covers everyday life: for example, food, clothing, household goods, and services such as bicycle or appliance repairs. It includes tips and addresses on topics like citizen’s allowance and housing allowance, the KreisbonusCard, and finding housing—as well as extensive information on support services and counseling centers for financial, care, and legal issues. The 56-page brochure also addresses social life. It lists neighborhood meeting places and senior clubs. But there are also places where lectures are held, books can be borrowed, or where the internet and computers can be used for free.

Staying Active in a Club or at Home

The third brochure, “All About Exercise” (64 pages), highlights programs for people aged 60 and older “of all backgrounds and cultures.” There are many options, ranging from public swimming pools to hiking trails. The “G’mütswegle” is designed to benefit not only the body but also the mind and inner balance. Tips on sports and health are available via the city’s advice hotline. Numerous clubs in the city and its surrounding neighborhoods offer a wide variety of sports activities. Those who wish to exercise at home will find simple, illustrated exercise routines. And: For those who can no longer leave their homes, the German Red Cross offers stimulating home visits. In addition to simple exercises for muscles, flexibility, and balance, the specialists also use the visit time for conversations.
